Merichelle Jones of We’re The Joneses wanted to give her living room a modern makeover, having the decor as the focal point of the room. Find out how she designed her entertainment center with decor from The Home Depot.
How to Style An Entertainment Center Around A Flatscreen TV
Does your living room revolve around your flatscreen? Ours did, too until we gave the entertainment center a design facelift! Even though the TV is the main source of entertainment in this room, it doesn’t have to steal the spotlight. I wanted our entertainment center to match the modern design of our home, so I turned to The Home Depot to find the perfect modern furniture and decor to surround our screen. I’ve listed some helpful tips to show how your entertainment center and surrounding decor can be a stylish focal point of your living room.
The Entertainment Center Before
This is our previous entertainment center my husband built when we moved into our house. While it is a great piece (and built really well!) the clunky rustic cedar never felt like it fit in our new modern home. We painted the wall behind it a beautiful slate navy color, and it was hard to even see the new accent wall because the piece was so over powering. Even with the entertainment center being decorated and having a large presence, the TV still seemed to be the main focus.
The Entertainment Center After
With our new entertainment center, the focus isn’t directly on the flatscreen but the whole design of the furniture and decor surrounding it. Its modern white design matches our current decor in this space while the openness helps highlight the accent wall behind it.
Choosing the Right Entertainment Center
When shopping for the new entertainment center, I listed out my top requirements to help narrow down my search. My biggest requirement was to find a furniture design that would match the design style of my home.
Design Tip: Finding an entertainment center that flows with the decor in your home will make the piece feel like a decorative accent of the room, instead of furniture that holds the TV.
I also wanted the entertainment center to feel open, and have free floating shelving instead of closed cabinets that would feel too closed off and bulky. When I found the white floating entertainment center, I fell in love with its modern design. I liked how it had the horizontal planks that subtly match the horizontal paneling on our mantel wall. It also has modern design features like the overhead lights and floating shelves that highlight the decor accents and draw your eye away from the flatscreen.
Frame the Flatscreen
When decorating around your flatscreen, try to create a soft frame around the TV. You can use decor accents to style a visual “picture frame” around the TV which helps create a softened look around the space.
Design Tip: Plants are a great way to add freshness and brighten up your home. Whether they are real or faux plants, they always bring a bit of life to a space!
I found lots of modern chic decorative faux plant options for the entertainment center shelves. I picked the variegated rubber plant in a white tower vase and the variegated wandering jew hanging basket plant. They both create a modern design look around the TV, with the shape of the rubber plant drawing your eye up and the movement of the flowing wandering jew plant gravitates your eye away from the screen.
Highlight Current Decor and Color Scheme
Design Tip: To help integrate the entertainment center into your room bring in decor accents that fit well within the space.
I found these gold decorative cubes to style around the TV to help bring in a few metallic touches that match my current decorative accents in this room. The gold pops against the bright white entertainment center and adds a touch of glam to the shelves.
Another favorite furniture find were the rose storage ottomans to go under the floating entertainment center. Bringing in a bright pop of color from the ottomans helps add a decorative element to the space and matches the pink floral accent chairs by the windows.
I love the new look of our entertainment center and how it transformed this corner of our living room into a modern decorative space in our home! Not only is Home Depot a home improvement store, but they also offer tons of chic and affordable home decor furniture options too. I hope I’ve inspired you work around your flatscreen by bringing in decorative furniture and decor accents that help steal back the spotlight from your TV!
